This is a topic that gets those not living in Japan to think of us as “hoarding trail info” or just not accepting new riders. This is not the case. Japan is different than many other countries. Just accept it is different and try and figure out how to work within the written and unwritten rules.
The only trails that should be published are approved/sanctioned trails. These trails have explicitly included mountain biking in the plan. It is not debatable and there is no friction in riding in these locations.
Many trails in Japan fail to recognize MTBs at all. There is no explicit inclusion or exclusion. So we must ride as if the next complaint could get us banned. This isn’t that big a deal since many of these trails are multi use non-directional trails. Good manners and a safe pace should keep things good for all involved… however for those visiting or new to Japan, riders maybe in the mindset to ‘go for it’ around every corner and drop. Back home with directional MTB only trails, this is the way to ride. Unsanctioned trails are different.
Please keep trails details limited to the public. It only takes an incident or two to get everyone banned. If you are new and looking for trials, post in the Facebook group and see if anyone can show you around your area.
Thanks!
